Seismic guidance for government office accommodation

New seismic principles have been developed to help agencies make decisions about the seismic resilience of their portfolio and the continued occupation of buildings with low seismic ratings.

Seismic principles for managing office buildings leased or owned by government agencies have been developed by the Government Property Group (GPG). They should be considered alongside new Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment 'Seismic Risk Guidance for Buildings' to help building owners and users understand seismic assessments.

The 'Seismic Risk Guidance for Buildings' provides the framework to make informed decisions about continuing to occupy buildings with low seismic ratings.

Seismic Risk Guidance for Buildings [PDF 2.7 MB] – Building Performance

The accompanying seismic principles developed by GPG should be read alongside this new seismic guidance and they will help agencies navigate seismic issues in relation to their own office accommodation.

These principles help agencies understand their seismic risk ratings, ensure building vulnerabilities are well understood and apply a consistent methodology to unique situations.
