Social services procurement and capability training
We’ve received great feedback about our new social services wānanga (workshops) which we offer through Hīkina, our online learning management system.
If you work in government social services procurement and want to upskill, Hīkina offers some great courses and face-to-face wānanga. The aim of this training is to grow understanding of different cultural perspectives and competency when you are procuring through different suppliers for social services.
I approached the two training sessions (Tikanga and Whanaungatanga) with a lot of curiosity and a little bit of trepidation as some of the material was a step into the unknown for me. To my delight (and relief), both workshops were welcoming, informative, expertly facilitated and conducted in a non-judgemental way that piqued my interest and encouraged me to continue my own journey in Te Ao Māori. Well done NZGP – I can’t wait to experience the next stages in the evolution of this training.

Here’s how it may work for you
For staff involved in social services procurement - the online courses Tikanga and Whanaungatanga will help you to understand the different cultural perspectives you may come across in your work. Complete the online training and then book a wānanga (face to face workshop) for Tikanga first and follow up with Whanaungatanga.
For staff involved in contract management - there are two online courses Hononga and Ratonga, which focus on good procurement practice when working with social services providers. Hononga replaces our popular Contract Manager’s Toolkit and is about good relationship management. If you’ve completed Hononga or the Contract Manager’s Toolkit then move on to Ratonga to deepen your skills for service delivery.
Here’s what another participant had to say:
Given the constitutional and legal implications of the Treaty these courses are a must for anyone wishing to progress or have a career in the Public sector. I found the course content to be well organised, informative, interesting and fun. The learning I gained from my attendance at this wānanga has and is adding significant value to my mahi in public service.
If this training sounds right for you, go and complete the online learning. We have more workshops coming next year. Once dates are finalised we’ll let you know.
You can access Hīkina from our website. To access Hīkina, users need to be a government staff member and use their RealMe login to access the training.
