Tracking air travel emissions
The Government has recognised a need to take a cross-agency approach on reducing the emissions of the public sector and NZGP have a number of initiatives underway in this area, including tracking air travel carbon emissions.
Through the second generation of the All-of-Government (AoG) Travel Management Services (TMS) contract we are now able to track, measure and report on regions of travel and the carbon created through air travel for participating agencies. If your agency offsets through an AoG TMS provider, we can also report on spend to offset the carbon emission created (per region per quarter). This is an exciting new way to help agencies track progress towards reducing emissions.
Due to seasonality in government travel patterns, four quarters of data is required to get an accurate picture of current annual emissions from air travel so over the next 12 months we are focusing on establishing a baseline. We are also aware that travel requirements differ significantly between agencies, so we are not looking at direct comparisons between agencies. The data will, become more useful over time as we seek greater public value from government procurement.
We have received the first quarterly reports to start tracking the progress of government emissions. If you are interested in receiving future emissions reports, please email us. If you are interested in ways to reduce your agency’s travel carbon emissions then please speak to your TMS provider.
