Electricity broader outcomes

The government has made it a priority to achieve broader outcomes that go beyond the immediate purchase of goods and services.

The electricity contract can be used to reduce emissions and waste, and assist the transitioning to a net zero emissions economy through the efficient use of energy (electricity).

The energy (electricity) used in buildings by agencies and schools plays a major part if New Zealand is to reach its climate change goals, including Net Zero Carbon by 2050. Suppliers are committed to working together with agencies and schools to:

  • Empower agencies and schools to efficiently manage electricity consumption by easily accessing better data. This helps to improve the operational efficiency of buildings. Improved efficiency will lead to lower operational emissions, also known as operational carbon, from buildings.
  • Provide specialist services such as internal advisory services, waste management planning, water pumping and/or wastewater planning, or other specialist services, possibly with extra cost.
  • Provide tutorials, workshops and webinars on decarbonisation and alternative options like solar power and electric vehicle charging.

The electricity suppliers have an industry leading environmental, social and governance (ESG) programme, with particular emphasis on delivering a more 'sustainable' energy/electricity sector in New Zealand, by openly reporting against ESG policies. Most suppliers source from renewable sources and build new renewable generator, partnering with Iwi when they can.
