Introduction to supplier management

Our government supplier management programme aims to improve practices across government, the resilience of our supply chain, and achieve greater value from suppliers.

The programme is a whole of government initiative impacting agencies and their suppliers. We have launched two toolkits designed to lift agency capability and support agencies to implement best practice.

Why Government supplier relationship management is important

A whole of government approach to supplier relationship management (SRM) provides greater oversight of the government’s most critical and strategic suppliers. Currently the government does not have a central view of supply risk. This makes it difficult to know how suppliers are prioritising critical services to government or where there are opportunities for collaboration across the system.

The government relies on its supply chain to deliver critical public services. The impact of supplier failure, especially during a major disruption, could be catastrophic.

Supplier management toolkit and guidance for professionals

This toolkit introduces the key elements of supplier management and the value of implementing consistent and uniformed practices. It’s been developed for procurement and commercial professionals involved in contract and supplier management - this could include teams in senior and executive leadership, project managers or business units such as IT teams.

The toolkit will also help those new to the industry, including procurement graduates.
